French cousins Gamay and Pinot Noir combine to make a sublime red.
As many Nimble fans have discovered, Gamay is one delightful grape variety. I've been lucky enough to secure fruit from a marquee grower in the Adelaide Hills again this year.
2024 was a smaller than average harvest for most varieties, including Gamay. The benefit of the late, cool season being the fruit ripened perfectly in the autumnal sunshine. The hand-picked fruit was crushed and fermented on skins for 10 days, before it was pressed into seasoned french oak hogsheads for malo-lactic conversion and a few months to settle.
While up at the winery tasting the fresh 2024 Gamay out of barrel, curiosity got the better of me and I tried blending a small amount of Pinot Noir into the Gamay. The result surprised all present - and I quickly decided to make a small 12% addition of Pinot Noir to my Gamay parcel. Gamay Noir was born.
The wine is stunning. Bright and aromatic, there's the forest fruits of Gamay punctuated by the bright red cherries and spice of the Pinot Noir. The palate is light to medium bodied, again with the 'fleshy' fruit generosity of the Gamay, with a subtle savoury edge from the Pinot Noir giving a refreshing, and overall delicious wine.
Where & When: All-summer-long. Sipping in the shade on a warm sunday afternoon, surrounded by friends and a charcuterie board. It will also make geat friends with grilled fish, lighter meat and game dishes.
