Versatile Italian grape finds a happy home in McLaren Vale
Montepulciano, or Monte, is best known for producing generous, flavoursome and great value wines from the central adriatic coast of Italy. Notable producers have achieved global fame with progressive Montepulciano wines, which have superb structure, layers of flavour and overall quality.
Monte found its way to Australia's shores some time ago, where its hardiness and late ripening qualities have seen it adopted by vignerons in many regions. McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate is ideally suited. This wine was made from a vineyard planted on the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs.
Picked in the autumnal sunshine of 2023, the fruit was crushed and fermented before maturation in large format seasoned oak barrels.
Briary red fruits leap out of the glass at you, with hints of spice and liquorice. On the palate, theres a generous wave of dark fruit characters, subtle oak and some silky tannins which carry this wine all over your tastebuds. Just, yum.
While this wine is deliciously enjoyable right now, it will certainly repay a year or two in a cool, dark place.
