A gem from the heart of WA's iconic Margaret River
Malbec might be a lesser known grape, but its certainly one to take note of.
While it is grown in the famous Bordeaux region of southwest France, Malbec is best known for the robust reds from Cahors to the east of Bordeaux. Argentina has adopted the grape as its national variety, achieving broad commercial success and much acclaim for their high end wines made from the grape.
Malbec has enjoyed a long history here in Australia, generally grown where its Bordeaux stablemate varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are found. Margaret River, south of Perth, is one of Australia's most acclaimed, not to mention picturesque wine regions, producing some of Australia's most lauded Bordeaux varietals.
I was lucky to secure this small parcel of Malbec via an old friend who worked at the Edinburgh Hotel & Cellars with me. He now makes wine for a celebrated winery over there, and was kind enough to share some of this tasty 2023 Malbec with me.
Lush and generous, it is brimming with blueberry and blackcurrant flavours, a creamy, slippery palate with hints of tobacco, cedary oak and soft, gentle tannins. It is quite alarming how quickly glasses of this wine slip down.
A wine to enjoy now, and/or hide a few bottles away to see how it gently evolves with time.
