A very inspirational winemaker once said 'Great wine is a sublime paradox, where power and elegance co-exist'. How very true.
DUPLEX aims to achieve this, by carefully blending two contrasting grape varieties from two contrasting regions.
The debut DUPLEX is a blend of Sangiovese from the Uleybury Vineyard at One Tree Hill, on the edge of the Adelaide Hills, with Merlot from the heart of Coonawarra.
Sangiovese heralds from Tuscany, where it is the backbone of the legendary wines of Chianti Classico, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino. The wines made around Brunello are amongst the most structured and powerful of all produced from Sangiovese. The unique 'Brunello' clones of Sangiovese produce wines of intensity, structure and power. I managed to secure one barrel of 'Mat 6' (Brunello clone) Sangiovese for this blend.
Merlot, on the other hand, is best known for its vibrant perfume and softness. Most commonly used in conjunction with its Bordeaux stablemates, Merlot plays a critical role in this DUPLEX blend. Acting as a counterweight to the Sangiovese's intensity, Merlot adds floral perfume, bright fruits and soft tannins to the profile of this wine.
Both parcels were vinified and barrel aged separately. I made an individual barrel selection of both barrels, carefully ensuring the resultant blend would be the perfect marriage of the two wines. The contrasts in both the varieties, but also location, aspect, climate and harvest is fascinating to contemplate as you sip this wine.
Overall, the 2022 DUPLEX Sangiovese Merlot displays the coveted power and elegance, such a hard balance to strike when working with a single variety and single vineyard.
Rich and complex, with layers of earthy red fruits, subtle cinnamon and cassis spice, velvety tannins and subtle oak. There's a lot going on, and it's all sublime. A wine to carefully cellar and enjoy as it passes through the stages of evolution.
