A wonderful example of this Spanish superstar grape.
Tempranillo, while a lesser-known variety here in Australia, is the mainstay of Spain's most famous wine region, Rioja. Lauded around the world for depth of vibrant flavour, layers of complexity and age-worthiness, Tempranillo has slowly found its way around the globe.
I managed to secure a small parcel from a friend who tends a wonderful vineyard in the central Watervale district of the Clare Valley, South Australia. Tended with care, the vines produced a balanced crop which ripened in the Autumnal sunshine of March 2025. Hand picked and basket pressed into seasoned French oak, this wine displays the classic varietal characters for which Rioja is so well known.
Lifted and aromatic with forest fruits, musk sticks and subtle oak. The palate is generous and silky, with dark cherries, rhubarb crumble, pomegranate molasses and fresh blueberry. Appetite inducing fine/chewy tannins invoke thoughts of raspberry and dried fig.
A delight to behold, and a wine which will reward a year or two in a dark, cool room.
Where & when: Resisting the temptation pun intended to go with the classic Spanish rice dish, I feel this is a wine which is most at home with a classic Aussie mixed grill on the BBQ. Gather with your friends and family, celebrate our wonderfully diverse culture and sip this delicious wine.
