Grillo, you may ask, is that a type of barbecue?
No, it is a white grape indigenous to Sicily with a fascinating history and delicious taste.
I was lucky enough to visit Sicily many years ago, and was awestruck by the island's topography, wine, food and culture. What a melting pot of influences! Grillo is a staple variety there, principally due to its ability to cope with hot dry summers while delivering crisp, refreshing and aromatic white wines.
Having heard there was a grower on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula with some Grillo, I had to head down there and see if I could land some. 2025 proved a wonderful season down there, and the Grillo came to ripeness in the late summer sun with lovely flavours, delicate acidity and texture.
The result is one yummy wine. If Riesling and Pinot Gris had a lovechild...
