The Tuscan staple - Aussie style
For those of us lucky enough to have visited Tuscany, we know the cliches all too well. Winding driveways lined with pencil pines, neat rows of vines, delicious soulful food, and Sangiovese - in its many guises. From Chianti Classico, to Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and the famed Brunello di Montalcino; Sangiovese is a versatile and fascinating variety.
I've been fortunate to have visited Tuscany many times, including working vintage at the famed Avigonesi Estate in 2003. I love Sangiovese for its many facets, so naturally it will be on rotation throughout the Nimble range.
Sangio made it to Australia in the 1970s, likely in the suitcases of returning Italians keen to bring a slice of la dolce vita back to Australia. The variety has taken hold and is grown in many regions across South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and even WA.
This example comes from a renowned vineyard in the Kenton Valley of SA. The higher exposition suits Sangiovese perfectly, allowing the grapes to fully ripen in the sunshine while retaining their trademark acidity and tannins.
The cooler 2024 harvest was ideal, giving the wine lifted aromatic characters, lovely juicy red fruits and a gentle, but firm tannin profile. After vinification in a traditional open fermenter, the wine was aged in seasoned oak barrels for 6 months prior to bottling
Its a taste of Tuscany, to be sure!
Where & When: A wine like this screams out for an antipasto platter, grilled lamb chops or a hearty minestrone soup.
