A taste of Southern France grown on the Fleurieu Peninsula
I fell in love with Picpoul while working in the UK wine trade. We imported a wonderful producer from Languedoc in the deep south of France, Domaine La Croix Gratoit. It quickly became our house white, thanks to its fabulous flavour and modest price tag.
Picpoul literally translates to 'lip stinger', a nod to the variety's zingy acidity - much like a fresh Watervale Riesling. Similar to Riesling too, Picpoul has lovely cirtus blossom notes, hints of stone fruits and a crisp, mouth watering finish. Distinctive to Picpoul is a salty savouriness, almost like you taste in a super freshly shucked oyster. Yes, it is a very moreish thing!
When I discovered a small grower at Currency Creek was growing Picpoul, I jumped at the chance to take some. This is a classic example of the variety, from a standout growing season.
Where & When: Did I mention oysters? Yup, freshly shucked with a drizzle of lemon juice and seasoning. A grilled prawn & peach salad at sunset also sounds pretty nice.
